So, today I thought I would share things that I have been taught or come across that have helped me improve the health and appearance of my skin and hair. They are not set in stone but they have worked for me and I would like to share them in the hopes that they may help someone else. I am aware that everyone is different and what works for me might not work for some one else. That being said, if you have any other tips and tricks that work for you, do leave them in the comment section below. I would love to hear from you.

1.Throw that towel away
Use an old t-shirt instead of a towel to dry your hair so that you protect the ends of your hair which are usually delicate and easily breakable right after a wash.

2. Baby your face and hair

Pat your hair and face dry as opposed to tugging at it.

3.Ease up on the shampoos

Co-wash your hair every 1-2 weeks depending on the porosity of your hair. (Co- washing is simply using conditioner to clean and condition your hair.) Co- washing is a great alternative to shampooing because it cleans your hair while moisturizing it where as most shampoos on the market strip your hair of all its natural oils and moisture. More co-washing means healthier longer hair as it minimizes hair breakage due to dryness.)

  1. Give your hair some space.

Instead of wearing your hair down all the time and combing it relentlessly or touching it incessantly, try wearing protective styles like putting it up in a bun, halo braids, bantu knots, etc to keep it from rubbing on your clothes, being damaged by harsh weather and to reduce breakage.

  1. Get a hair cut

Okay not like the big chop or anything like that but DO cut the ends of your hair every 8 weeks to promote growth and get rid of those pesky dead ends. Your hair will thank you later!

6.No heat

Keep heat styling to a minimum. If you must heat style your hair, be sure to use a heat protective serum.

7.Protect your hair

Wear a satin/silk scarf/ cap or use a silk pillow at night time to reduce hair fall out. Kentaro (The Good hair Collective) has satin caps which go for UGX 20,000.

  1. Sunscreen

Even if you have that beautiful chocolate skin, DO wear sunscreen before any exposure to the sun to protect your skin from the aging and damaging effects of the sun not to mention reduce the chances of getting skin cancer.

  1. Have a nightime routine

If you don’t have one, establish a daily nighttime and  skin care routine asap and stick to it. Make sure it is practical both in terms of time and money so that you can maintain it.

  1. Give yourself the spa treatment.

Have a mini facial at least once a week, (exfoliate, cleanse, tone and moisturize) and a deep facial every 2 weeks (Do all the steps for the mini facial above and simply add steam and masking to that routine) PS; all this can be done at home affordably. You don’t have to actually go to a spa.

  1. Do not go to bed with makeup

This seems so obvious but sometimes we do just plop onto our beds after a long day or a long night out and go to bed with makeup still on our faces.To avoid that unwanted morning breakout, remove your makeup soon as you get home. There are many affordable drugstore makeup removers and wipes you can use but I like to use extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil as they do the job quite nicely, are organic, gentle and also moisturize my skin pretty well.

  1. Oil her up

Use body oils for baby soft skin. I use Ultimate Organics Moisturising Body Gloss which I got at capital shoppers ntinda for UGX 18,000. If you struggle with dry skin, I recommend this for the whole body. It has aloe, vitamin E, coconut oil( my favorite), Almond and Ginseng Extract plus it smells amazing and gives you that beautiful lit from within glow!!!

  1. Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize!

As you moisturize your face and body,do NOT neglect your neck , hands and elbows. Wrinkled hands and neck and ashy elbows are not a cute look which is exactly what will happen to you over the years if you ignore those areas. I use Nivea crème to moisturize my face, neck, hands and elbows and have found its pretty inexpensive and does a pretty good job of moisturizing without being greasy. A tin of 60 ml goes for UGX 4,500. A lot of ladies with dry skin struggle to find a good moisturizer that can hydrate their skins. If that’s you, look for moisturizers that have Hyaluronic Acid in  them for smooth, flawless and hydrated skin.

  1. Let your skin breathe for a minute!

We live in the age of  the gram and whereas you may feel the need to be instagram ready at all times,  DO resist the temptation to wear makeup everyday and give yourself some makeup free days ( at least two to three days  a week). She needs to breathe!

15.Eat clean.

The saying “You are what you eat” couldn’t be more true when it comes to skincare and hair. Stock up on super foods like spinach and avocados for beautiful skin and shiny hair.

  1. Exercise.

Looking for that instant glow and an improved complexion? Get active. Exercise also helps improve blood circulation which improves hair growth. If working out is a challenge for you (like it is for me) try out these apps. Fit radio (Android, ios: Free) for a killer work out playlist, My Fitness Pal (Android, ios: Free) which helps track your workouts and calorie intake and  Charity miles (my favorite) which converts your workout miles into cash that is donated to various charities around the world (how awesome is that?) With all these apps, you don’t need to go to the gym to work out. You can do it on the go or wherever you are if you are pressed for time.

  1. Stay hydrated.

Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. If you are like me and don’t like water too much, try having a couple of slices of lemon, orange or cucumber in your water. Trust me. It makes all the difference and you WILL have beautiful dewy skin.

18.Get at least 8 hours of sleep.

They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing. I like to use the Noizio (ios) app to enhance my sleep experience. They have a great selection of ambience sounds to help you drift off to sleep if you are having trouble shutting your brain off. Search the app stores on ios and android for similar apps or just pop on some soothing music or read a book, whatever helps you get those zzz’s.

19.Condition, moisturize and seal your hair

Do this on an as needed basis to keep your hair from getting dry. I do this every two days because my hair loses a lot of moisture really fast.

  1. Know your products.

Research the products you use on your face and hair to avoid harsh chemicals and make sure your skin and hair are getting exactly what they need. I use EWG’s Healthy Living app (available on both Android an ios for free) to research the quality and ingredients  of the products I use.
